As a railroad hub, Nashville experienced a cholera epidemic along the Cumberland River, and it was estimated that it killed a thousand people. In addition, towns along lakes in the region were struck by the disease. However, the outbreak was part of a much larger epidemic of cholera in the Mississippi Valley system.

During the Civil War, Nashville served as a political and military center for the state. For the duration of the war, the city was occupied by Union troops. Although the Confederates conducted a war of attrition, the battle of Nashville was the last major military action of the war, and it was a decisive victory for the Union.

The city is home to several Fortune 500 companies, including UBS, Nissan North America, SmileDirectClub, Tractor Supply Company, Community Health Systems, Hospital Corporation of America, and UBS. It is also the seat of Vanderbilt University, which was founded in 1873.

Several enslaved African Americans who were originally from Middle Tennessee were able to flee to the Union lines during the war. Many were housed in contraband camps surrounding military installations.

The city is governed by a 40-member metropolitan council. Since 1963, Nashville has had a consolidated city-county government.
